The First Day I Got My Dog, Sandy

    by Megan Peterkin

It’s funny how I got my dog Sandy. It was Mothers’ Day and instead of me giving my mom a present, my mom gave me a present. We also were having a Mothers’ Day party. My friend, Shani, came with her family. Her sister, Janima, came to our house, too. We were so excited! We kept on imagining what Sandy would look like.

"We’re leaving," yelled my dad.

"Shani," I said, "are you sure you don’t want to come?"

"Yes, I’m sure," was her reply.

So we started off toward our meeting place (we were getting her because my cousin’s cousin’s dog had puppies), a gas station. When I first saw her, I think my heart either stopped, or skipped a beat! She was so cute! I held her on the way home. She went to the bathroom on me twice and threw up on me once. Then we got home.

"She’s here, everybody," I called.

There was a rush to the kitchen, where I was.

"Oh, she’s so cute!"

"Can I hold her?"

"Let me see her!"

"What’s her name?"

"Quiet, you’re scaring her!" I finally got everybody quiet. When I put her down, she zig-zagged around the kitchen. When Sandy got used to walking around, she went by the cozy, warm vent, swerved, and fell asleep. When Sandy awoke, we played with her both inside and out. She was cute and completely wonderful. While we ate, we fed her some food. All of us played with her the rest of the afternoon. After a while, Shani had to go back to her house. My sister and I had to get ready for bed. The day had been a grand, glorious day. I fell asleep very, very happy.

That is how my first day with Sandy went. Now, I’ve grown to love her and treat her like my sister.
